I CANNOT believe nobody has mentioned Tate Donovan. We were in Space Camp together. When the shuttle takes off and you see the gamut of emotions ebb and tide across his humanity and he exclaims, "Dude, I think we lifted off..." well... shivers, just shivers, I tell ya.

I would rank Hoffman number 1. Pacino a slight edge over De Niro.

Serpico was good; but ya know, I really think he has gone down hill. Godfather, sorry, gets way too much press, and the last fifteen yrs he is almost a caricature of himself...really. Don't get me wrong, I liked him at one time, but I defn put your Bob way above Al. And I have a hard time judging ANY of these kids as above the likes of Paul, Marlon, Humphrey, etc., etc.

Now understand your handle...never looked close enough.

I agree about the latter part of Pacino's career, however the same can be said about De Niro. I'm judging them based on the good roles they chose, not the bad ones.

Duvall I was considering putting #10, however I do think depp and dicaprio will move up the ranks in the next decade or so. I also love depp's range as an actor. Ed Wood, Dead Man (Jarmusch is a brilliant), & Fear and Loathing are 3 of my favorite films and I can't think of any actor who could pull off the variety of roles he's done. As of now I put Depp at #10.

Hey WT, ya crusty ol' bastard, are you saying that you just noticed my user name refers to De Niro?

Also, I didn't place any of those 'kids' above your brando or newman, although I do believe Depp will outrank Bogart within 15 years.
I half expected you to chose Charlie Chaplin! Have you seen any movies that came out after the 70's? ;-)

Ha! Yes, actually, I think part of the problem is I see EVERY movie these kids make, via DVD, video, etc., and thus we see all the bad ones and the good ones, ya know? We only see the "classics" of the older actors, so I think there's a real bias there.

Don't you agree?

I really do watch a lot of movies (physical issues), so I have seen them all...it also leads to "saturation" in which you start having trouble judging the actors, and of course, you always have to have a few decades to judge, with hindsight, etc.

Defn like Depp; one of the current greats. And, defn agree with Arb bout Duvall.

Out of the current ones, last few decades, no particular order, my list would mirror yours: Deniro, Duvall, Penn, Depp, Lewis, even Bridges in context, blah, blah, blah, but have a tough time deciding on true "greats" (a la bogie, peck, o'toole).

Yup, I just noticed your handle in this thread...too many ltrs originally, so I just skimmed it...knew you as the "rdn...etc" poster...

VERY true! Unless somebody is a die-hard fan of an older actor, they won't go out of their way to see ALL that actor's films, just the good ones. BTW looking over Bogart's filmography, can't find many bad films on there. He definitely chose his roles wisely.

That's one thing I love about Daniel Day Lewis so much. Every role he choses, takes such intense preparation, he wouldn't have time to be in a lot of films so he's very selective about what roles he choses. As a result, every performance from him is breathtaking. Lewis is one of the most fascinating actors I've ever read about. He quit acting for 5 years to become a shoemaker in Florence! Then he comes back after not acting for years and plays Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York.

Anyway, these days if there's an actor we like, we tend to see all their films (good or bad). As a result this could certainly affect one's judgement when comparing Depp to O'Toole for example.

Sorry about the many many letters in my user name WT. Pretty funny you haven't bothered to look past the first few letters till now. Maybe I'll just call you Wil.

Depp defn has range; Lewis too; hated Dicrap-re-O originally, BUT I am quickly changing my mind the past couple yrs, ya know? He defn has potential to improve, and I like him in many roles lately.

Defn like Morgan Fr/Denzel...

You know who is often underappreciated is Peter Sellers; did some crap, esp later on, but he was a brilliant if unfulfilled actor and narrowly restricted (Strangelove is one of my top five movies, all time).

I have an even tougher time evaluating the gals of today; I just don't see JRoberts as the equivalent of BDavis or Ingrid, ya know?

I could have guessed Dr. Strangelove would be would of your favorites.

Sadly I can't think of any great younger actresses. After seeing Black Swan though, I gained a HUGE amount of respect for Natalie Portman. Always liked her since she her role in Leon (another one of my favorites), but she's been in way too much garbage, especially lately it seems. Your Highness? No Strings Attached? Come on Natalie, push yourself like you did with Black Swan. Aronofsky brings out the best in actors.

Some others that I like who are working today and still relatively young: (I'm making 47 the cutoff age)
- Cate Blanchett
- Hilary Swank
- Kate Winslet
- Amy Adams
- Naomi Watts
- Mary-Louise Parker

i put hoffman slightly above nicholson. i am a MUCH bigger nicholson fan i just find hoffman's acting to be slightly better.

the main reason i see de niro as numero uno is due to his versatility and his sheer number of academy-award worthy performances. i don't think anybody compares. lets see, here's a few of my favorites:

- godfather part II
- taxi driver
- raging bull
- the deer hunter
- goodfellas
- awakenings (what a performance!)
- cape fear (the perfect Max Cady!)
- the untouchables
- a bronx tale
- casino
- this boy's life
- bang the drum slowly
- heat

here's my list:
1 - de niro
2 - pacino
3 - hoffman
4 - nicholson
5 - brando
6 - daniel day lewis
7 - sean penn
8 - hanks
9 - newman
10 - depp/dicaprio in 20 years these 2 could be in the top 5

some more of my favorites i forgot:
- james stewart (the number of good films he's been in is astounding)
- gary oldman (one of the best working actors today, very underrated)
- clint eastwood (would be higher up if he had better range as an actor, love his directing as well)
- christian bale (can't imagine what his body of work will be like in 20 yrs)
- hopkins
- hackman
- fonda

Morgan Freeman is such a great voice over artist in addition to his acting: March of the Penguins, CBS Evening News, and this:

I think Pacino has more range. In later years DiNiro, while undeniably great has been walking through many roles. Pacino strives to maintain his intensify. I also think his stage works gives him an edge.

this is a fairly low-activity forum. not enough new gd related topics to talk about each day. without a few non-dead related threads this place would get awfully boring sometimes.

Funny you posted 11-14-73 just listened to the Whole Show today actually. And really started to dig the lyrics in The Race Is On. I never really liked the song until I realized that all the horses in the race are different emotions associated with breaking up with someone.

Early today I had 15 mins to listen to some music, and all the post were Pacino debate post and my immediate reaction was ahhh come on!
